Specialist police unit prevents £85 million of fraud

A specialist police unit, the Dedicated Card and Payment Crime Unit (DCPCU), has prevented a total of £85 million worth of fraud in the first half of 2021. Its activities also resulted in some 49 criminal convictions during that time.

The DCPCU, which is funded by the banking and finance industry and is a partnership between UK Finance, the City of London Police and the Metropolitan Police together with the Home Office, has tackled several criminals including those seeking to profit from the COVID-19 pandemic. One example involved a fraudster impersonating the NHS to collect individuals’ personal details.

The unit is continuing its efforts and is currently investigating more than 140 live cases, of which 43 involve organised crime groups.
