ECON reports on proposed amendments to MiFID II

In July 2020, the European Commission published a proposal for a Directive to amend the MiFID II Directive (2014/65/EU) to assist the EU’s economic recovery from the Covid-19 pandemic. The European Parliament’s Economic and Monetary Affairs Committee (ECON) has now published its report in response to the Commission’s proposal.

As a reminder, the Commission is proposing to amend the information requirements in MiFID II to remove some administrative burdens on firms relating to provision of information to clients. The Commission is also proposing some amendments to the energy derivatives markets, and the rules on paying for research on small and mid-cap issuers and on fixed income instruments.

The legislative procedure file for the proposal indicates that the ECON report will be considered by the European Parliament in its plenary session between 23 and 26 November 2020.
