CMA may be given enhanced powers to impose fines for consumer law breaches

The government has announced that it will consult on whether the CMA should be given the power to fine businesses directly if they have breached consumer law, for example through the ‘loyalty penalty’ and unfair cancellation charges.

The government will also put through any legislation needed to enable other regulators such as the FCA to act to protect customers whose are exploited through their loyalty.

These proposals will be detailed in a Consumer White Paper to be published soon.
