Charity Commission publishes sanctions alert

The Charity Commission has warned charities that operate in Syria or Turkey of the dangers of aid passing through the Bab Al-Hawa crossing. There have been reports that the crossing is under the control of Al Qa’ida which means that charities and their partners that use it could inadvertently be funding that organisation and thereby committing an offence under s17 TACT. The Commission advises charities to check they know which border crossings their partners are using when delivering aid from Turkey to Syria. Those that find the crossing has been used since September or is still being used by need to consider making a report under s19 TACT and a serious incident report to the Charity Commission.
