BEIS gives payment surcharge guidance

BEIS has published guidance on the Consumer Rights (Payment Surcharges) Regulations 2012.  New rules come into force on 13 January 2018 as a result of PSD2 that ban surcharges on a wide range of transactions, while limiting them in others. PSD2 bans merchants from charging a fee on the basis of a consumer’s choice of payment instrument. For other retail payments and commercial payment instrument transactions, merchants can charge no more than the direct cost they bear for using the relevant means of payment.
