EPC consults on mobile contactless card payments

The European Payments Council (EPC) has launched a three month consultation on the Mobile Contactless Single Euro Payments Area Card Payments Implementation Interoperability Guidelines (MCP IIGs). EPC has updated the MCP IIGs with the help of stakeholders from the mobile contactless payment industry, with the aim of standardising a smooth and secure means of mobile contactless payment throughout Europe.

Updates reflect new cloud-based technology and incorporate the concept of strong customer authentication as defined in PSD2. The changes being consulted upon endeavour to:

  • Enable the quick development and implementation of mobile contactless card payment solutions;
  • Avoid further fragmentation of the market for mobile contactless card payments and promote Single Euro Payments Area reach; and
  • Provide transparency to market participants by describing the roles of the stakeholders involved.

For those involved in the mobile payments ecosystem, EPC encourages feedback via a questionnaire available for completion until 26 January 2018.
