PSR looks forward to increased payment systems access

PSR’s annual report on access and governance of payment systems looks forward to new providers getting direct access to the interbank payment systems in the next year.  It hopes this will improve competition in payment services and high street banking and therefore be good for consumers. Hannah Nixon said PSR expects the new entrants to be small fintech firms and challenger banks, who want to compete on a level playing field with high street banks. Five institutions have joined Faster Payments in the past few months, and three are expected to enter the market for provision of indirect access to payment systems. PSR is pleased with progress, but is pushing for yet more improvements to ensure fair and open access, including the development of aggregator access models. .
